Long term fix for tuna treaty will require more research, but if tuna's demise means a more extensive commercial effort to clean up the oceans, the move by the Japanese to sign up is a welcome one.


But that will require major effort on the part of fish conservationists. For starters, it's almost universally conceded that most of the world's fish species are now under threat from overfishing — and over-hunting. Not only is tuna a particularly important global fishery, but also the enormous fish population is now threatened by overfishing. The WWF estimated last year that overfishing killed nearly a quarter of the world's species by the end of the century.

Tuna is no different. It has been in decline for roughly 25 years due to overfishing — over-fishing that is still happening, but over a larger scale. In fact, there is so much overfishing in this region that there are now over 500 million tons of "fishing" going on in this region, which will require an international effort to help reduce that overfishing, and perhaps to slow it down a little.


But one thing is certain: the Japanese tuna trade is a huge success story; for all its issues, this is one of the largest commercial fisheries in the world, and that success is directly tied to Japan's tuna strategy and that strategy has resulted in the massive amounts of seafood caught on an almost continuous basis.

The Japanese trade is not a perfect one. The most obvious issue has always been pollution and its impact on marine life. Japanese tuna has been around for thousands of years. In terms of pollution:


Tuna caught in the United States is polluting the air. Over 80 percent of U.S. tuna caught in the Pacific comes from Japan.


Over 70 percent of all Pacific Ocean fish is caught from Japan, and half of all Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico fish comes from Japan, as well.


Tuna catches also pollute water quality in a number of countries. In Mexico, more than 25 million tons of fish from Japan's fisheries is being caught, in fact more than is caught anywhere else in Latin America by any government.

In 2014, a total of 1.5 billion metric tons of Japanese catch was exported through its Asian tuna fishery. That is more than the combined export shipments from all of the countries listed above combined.

But there are other problems that the Japanese tuna trade is now addressing with respect to climate change and environmental issues.
